Roman Missal Implementation Project

FINAL TEXT OF THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL RELEASED!

This morning [8/20/10] Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago and USCCB President, announced to the body of bishops that we have received the final text of the Roman Missal. Implementation of the new text will take place, as anticipated, on the First Sunday of Advent, 2011 (November 27, 2011)....

In the meantime you can access the final text of the Order of Mass [at]www.usccb.org/romanmissal, which is being updated today to reflect the latest text. We draw your attention to a number of modifications made in the Order of Mass since its' original approval in 2008, some of which may affect musical settings of the Order of Mass and other catechetical resources already in print:

--the words of absolution in the Penitential Act have been modified (so that the text of the current Sacramentary is maintained);

--the addition of "I believe" at three points in the Profession of faith;

--several slight modifications to the texts of the Eucharistic Prayers;

--the final doxology of the Eucharistic Prayer has been slightly altered.

Regarding adaptations for the Dioceses of the United States, you will notice in the Order of Mass that the acclamation "Christ has died" has not been approved. Musical settings of the Order of Mass must not include this acclamation. Alternate forms of the tropes for form C of the Penitential Act were approved. They will be contained in an appendix in the final text of the Missal.

As noted above, there are differences between the 2008 and 2010 versions of the Order of Mass... therefore, some catechetical materials may be slightly off... we will be making the needed corrections and post updated materials as quickly as possible.

The upcoming third edition of the Roman Missal affords all of us the opportunity to delve even more deeply into the liturgy: What is it that we are doing and why are we doing it? More than just changes to words or rubrics, the new Missal calls us to a more profound engagement with the Mystery made present in our worship. The new Missal is our Church's next step in following the directives of the Second Vatican Council, which called all of us to a full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy.

Moroney (former Executive Secretary of the USCCB's Commitee on the Liturgy and Executive Secretary of the Vox Clara Commission), interviews with Vox Clara members, and--especially useful for priest-celebrants--recordings of Msgr. Moroney praying the new translations of the Eucharistic Prayers. (Please note that it appears as if the final versions of the Eucharistic Prayers are slightly different than what we have seen in the previously-approved Order of Mass, so this recording will also be slightly from the final texts.)

Continuing Formation Events

Diocese of Davenport

Starting in November of this year, our diocese will begin a year-long process of preparing for the implementation of the third edition of the Roman Missal on the First Sunday of Advent: November 27, 2011. As our blueprint, we will be using the USCCB’s Parish Guide to Implementing the Roman Missal, Third Edition. As part of that process, the following opportunities are being planned for our diocese. Details will be posted here as they become available.

Clergy Overnighter (November 8-10, 2010)

A day-and-a-half have been added to the November clergy gathering to go over the implementation process, review resources for parish use, and take a look at the theology and spirituality of the new Missal. A copy of the Parish Guide will be given to the priests (and PLAs) in attendance.

Chancery Workshop (Staff Meeting on March 16, 2011)

Deanery Workshops for Lay Leaders

Among the first steps in the implementation process is for each parish to assemble an “implementation committee.” While this might be the liturgical commission of the parish, it may be better to gather a different group for this purpose—since the commission will still have to attend to its regular responsibilities. Members of the implementation committee could include some members of the liturgy commission, musicians, catechists, school teachers, deacons, and others in parish leadership.

Schools not attached to a parish and religious communities are also encouraged to assemble their own committee and take part in the diocese’s implementation process.

In January and February, we will be hosting a series of workshop around the diocese for members of these implementation committees and for other lay liturgical leaders. The focus of these workshops is to “train the trainers” for doing the necessary formation in their parishes. The dates and locations of these workshops are as follows:

January 15, 2011 St. Paul the Apostle, Davenport (Davenport Deanery)
January 22, 2011 Sacred Heart, Newton (Grinnell Deanery)
January 29, 2011  St. Patrick, Iowa City (Iowa City Deanery)
February 5, 2011 St. Alphonsus, Mt. Pleasant (Keokuk Deanery)
February 19, 2011 St. Joseph, DeWitt (Clinton Deanery)
February 26, 2011 St. Patrick, Ottumwa (Ottumwa Deanery)

Registration forms and other details will be posted here in the near future.

Musician Workshop

In May, we will run two additional workshops for those who lead music ministry in their parishes (choir/music directors, keyboardists, cantors).

May 7, 2011 St. Mary, Pella
May 21, 2011 St. Mathias, Muscatine

Registration forms and other details will be posted here in the near future.

The June Clergy Institute and Faith Formation Institute will also be devoted to the new Missal, and we will have a special workshop for deacons on June 25. More details will follow as they become available.
