There Are No "Off" Years
(Rights and Responsibilities)
With no no major state or federal elections this month, it’s easy to think we have some time off. But there really are no off years. Congress works year round on new legislation, and each January, our state legislature convenes to propose, debate and vote on new laws. The next few months are prime time to learn as much as you can about an issue and advocate to your local representatives. You may have a topic you feel strongly about personally, and there are also legislative priorities identified by the Iowa Catholic Conference with our bishops. In Solidarity with Regufees:
The U.S. Catholic bishops’ social justice department has issued an action
alert regarding the federal Farm Bill. *Please contact your member of
Congress today at www.votervoice.net/usccb/home and ask them to insist on
changes to the bill. It has serious flaws that would negatively impact
poor, hungry and vulnerable people. You can see the U.S. bishops’ recent
letter on the House Farm Bill here

About the Team:
With the assistance of Catholic Relief Services, the Dioceses has formed a Justice and Peace Advocacy Team (JPAT) to provide a voice for the poor and disenfranchised to our state and federal legislators. The Team studies the issues, formulates positions, and plans advocacy so that Catholics are able to assure the "least of these" are ahead.
