Last Friday, Pope Francis announced changes to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. The Extraordinary Form is celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal. Since it is celebrated in Latin, is often is referred to as the Latin Mass.
After consulting with bishops around the world, Pope Francis determined that norms established in 2007, which permitted priests to offer the Extraordinary Form of the Mass broadly, have caused disunity in the Church by separating people from the Ordinary Form of the Mass that was established following the Second Vatican Council.
The changes announced on Friday include a greater role of each bishop in authorizing the use of the 1962 Roman Missal, determining the locations where the Latin Mass is celebrated (but not in parish churches), appointing a priest to oversee the pastoral care of groups that celebrate the Latin Mass, and determining that people who attend the Latin Mass do not deny the legitimacy of the Ordinary Form of the Mass.
In the Diocese of Davenport, the Extraordinary Form of the Mass is celebrated at Holy Family Church in Davenport and St. Patrick Church in Iowa City.
The new norms are being studied carefully to determine the changes to be made in the Diocese of Davenport. The diocese wants to be sensitive to the effects of the new norms on the people who are drawn to the Latin Mass.
